Flint, MI — December 4, 2024 - Flint Community Schools proudly announced the successful application and receipt of the Federal American Rescue Plan Act, Homeless Children and Youth II (ARP-HCY II) grant. The ARP-HCY II grant, funded through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, provided critical resources to help local education agencies (LEAs) support scholars experiencing homelessness. The ARP-HCY II grant offered essential funding aimed at identifying homeless children and youth, providing necessary wraparound services to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and ensuring that these scholars could fully participate in school activities. The funding, available through September 30, 2024; empowered Flint Community Schools to take significant steps in improving the lives of its most vulnerable scholars.
With over $300,000 awarded through the ARP-HCY II grant, Flint Community Schools used this funding to make a meaningful impact, including:
Partnering with the Shelter of Flint: Flint Community Schools collaborated with the Shelter of Flint to create a safe, enclosed playground space where children could play and enjoy a worry-free environment. This initiative provided a joyful and secure space for kids to engage in healthy activities, benefiting several FCS families who lived at the Shelter of Flint.
Technology Donations: To further support the academic and recreational needs of children and families residing at the Shelter of Flint, the district donated several iPads, iPad minis, and three desktop computers. These devices were crucial for tutoring sessions and recreational activities, ensuring that scholars have access to technology for learning and personal development.
The Flint Board of Education voted to approve the utilization of these funds to support the Shelter of Flint, emphasizing the district’s commitment to addressing the needs of scholars experiencing homelessness. The grant allowed for the use of funds to support the identification, enrollment, retention, and academic success of homeless scholars, as well as outreach and training to ensure these scholars were fully supported. By prioritizing these initiatives, Flint Community Schools demonstrated our commitment to every scholar's well-being and academic success, especially those facing homelessness.
“We were committed to ensuring that all scholars, regardless of their housing status, had access to safe, engaging, and supportive environments,” said Kevelin Jones, Superintendent of Flint Community Schools. “Our partnership with the Shelter of Flint was just one example of how we used ARP-HCY II funds to provide vital resources for our families.”
“Ensuring our scholars feel supported and have the resources they need to thrive has always been a top priority,” said Casanya Amenyuie, Attendance Agent Supervisor and Homeless Educator at Flint Community Schools. “With these initiatives, we were able to make a meaningful difference, giving our children the stability and opportunities they deserve.”
Flint Community Schools is honored to invest in the well-being of its scholars and their families, recognizing that a supportive community is essential for student success. This playground and technology donation represents a step forward in fostering safe and enriching environments for all children, ensuring they feel valued and have the tools they need to grow and succeed.
